The Green Co-nversation #16 | February 2026

Hello, Leanne here, taking over Edition #16 of The Green Co-nversation. đ
This month, we caught up with our friends at Salt of the Earth to share their story and the journey behind their natural deodorant brand. Weâre also featuring a brilliant story from one of our lovely customers that really made me smile while packing orders, plus a little update on whatâs been happening behind the scenes at The Green Co.
So pop the kettle on, settle in, and enjoy this monthâs edition. đ
Conversation With Our Co-mmunity
As Operations Manager, I pack thousands of orders every month, so itâs always exciting to see where they end up! These incredible photos were sent in by Lizzie Wynn-Slatter, taken during a sailing voyage from Portugal to the Azores aboard Spirit of Gaia. Knowing that our Laundry Detergent GreenSheets⢠made it onto a thousand mile Atlantic crossing is pretty amazing! Lizzie shared how handy our sample packs were for life at sea, lightweight, compact, and perfect for washing on the move.
Thank you so much to Lizzie for sharing her story and photos with us.Â

đâď¸ Travelling soon? Make sure to pack your own Laundry Detergent GreenSheets⢠for just 19p per wash to make travelling easier and more convenient.Â
A Conversation With Salt Of The EarthÂ
Hello! đ For anyone new to Salt of The Earth, can you tell us your story and and what inspired you to create a  natural deodorant brand?
Hi everyone! Salt of the Earth started back in 1993 when it was called Crystal Spring â just a simple crystal deodorant made from natural mineral salt, Potassium Alum. My mum Sally bought the business in 2005, and I joined a year later after finishing my business degree.
Â
The turning point for me was actually trying the product myself. I'll be honest, I was sceptical at first â natural deodorant wasn't exactly cool back then. But when I discovered it genuinely worked, I thought "this is something special worth building on." We already had Holland & Barrett stocking it, which showed there was real demand, but the range was tiny â just two products.
Â
In 2008, we made the decision to rebrand to Salt of the Earth and expand into a full natural deodorant range. The timing was spectacularly bad â right in the middle of the financial crisis â but we could see people were starting to care more about what they put on their skin and its impact on the planet. We wanted to give them choice: effective, certified natural products across every format you could want.
Â
Fast forward to today, we've sold over 10 million deodorants and we're still family-owned and independent â no venture capitalists, just a family with a bit of an obsession for making natural deodorants that actually work.
Your products are made with 100% natural origin ingredients. Why is this commitment to natural so important to your brand and customers?
It's honestly in our DNA. My mum Sally has always been passionate about complementary health and natural therapies â my sister and I were raised on home-made kombucha and kefir long before they became trendy cafĂŠ offerings! So when she bought the business, natural was never a compromise; it was the whole point.
Here's the thing: being 100% natural isn't the easiest or cheapest route. We could make our lives simpler and our margins better by taking shortcuts, but that's never been who we are. We back up our commitment with COSMOS Natural certification from the Soil Association â one of the strictest natural standards in the world. It holds us accountable on everything from ingredient sourcing to manufacturing processes.
What we've spent years perfecting is proving that natural doesn't mean ineffective. OurÂ
formulations use powerful natural minerals like magnesium and mineral citrate to neutralise odour-causing bacteria, combined with soothing botanicals like aloe vera, coconut oil, and shea butter to care for your skin. It's taken countless hours of development and testing, but the result is natural protection that actually works â even during life's sweatiest moments.
Your commitment to sustainability is fantastic. How does this shape your packaging choices and product design?
Â
Thank you â though I should mention we've been doing this since before it was fashionable! We launched our first refillable spray back in 2013 as a bit of an experiment, making us one of the first deodorant companies to offer refills. At the time, people thought we were mad â but we knew it was the right thing to do.
Fast forward to today, and we now have over 40 different refill options across sprays, roll-ons, and sticks. Our newest innovation is a revolutionary refill pouch that makes the wholeÂ
process even easier and reduces packaging waste even further.
But it goes beyond just refills. We've switched to using Prevented Ocean Plastic in our spray bottles packaging, which is using plastic captures from up to 30 mile from coastal areas in places without proper recycling infrastructure. And because we're COSMOS Natural certified, we're held to strict environmental standards across our entire operation â from using biodegradable cleaning products in our factory to constantly reviewing and improving our packaging impact.
Here's what we've learned over the past decade: sustainability only works if it's convenient. If it's complicated or inconvenient, people won't stick with it. That's why we've obsessed over making our refills practical and appealing to use â because the more people who adopt refillable systems, the bigger the impact we can make together.
Youâve partnered with Ecologi to support global climate projects and plant thousands of trees. Can you tell us more about this collaboration and what it means to you?
We've been working with Ecologi since 2020, and it's become a really important part of how we operate. To date, we've helped plant over 13,000 trees and prevented 575 tonnes of CO2 from being emitted through 47 verified carbon avoidance projects around the world. We use the partnership to offset our employees' carbon footprints, which felt like the right approach for us. It's about taking responsibility for our team's impact and investing in genuine climate solutions.
The projects we support are incredibly diverse: protecting the MatavĂŠn rainforest in Colombia, generating clean energy through hydropower in Uganda, wind power in Thailand and Mexico, peatland restoration in Indonesia. What I love about Ecologi is the transparency â we can see exactly where our contribution goes and the measurable impact it's having in these communities and ecosystems.
It's incredibly motivating for the team too. There's something tangible about being able to say "we've planted 13,000 trees and prevented 575 tonnes of CO2 emissions." You can visualize that impact.
This partnership ties in perfectly with why we became a B Corp. We believe businesses have a responsibility to be a force for good, not just profit. Ecologi is one of the ways we actively give back and take responsibility for our environmental footprint â not just by reducing our impact, but by genuinely contributing to solutions.
For someone thinking of making the switch to natural deodorant, do you have any recommendations on where to start?
Welcome! It's easier than you think. Start with whichever format feels most familiar. IfÂ
you're used to aerosols, try our refillable sprays; if you prefer seeing it go on, try a roll-on.
Here's the key thing: some people experience a short adjustment period as their body detoxes from aluminium-based antiperspirants â usually about two weeks. You might sweat a bit more as your pores reopen, and yes, you might smell a bit for a few days. It's completely normal and temporary. Just stick with it daily, even on days you're staying home, and your body will adjust.
If one format or fragrance doesn't feel quite right, try another â we've got the widest range out there specifically so you can find what works for you.

A Conversation With The Green Co. CrewÂ
Weâve had a really exciting start to the year here at The Green Co. HQ. Over the past year, we spent a lot of time listening to your feedback on how our products could work even better for your homes. As a result, weâve introduced new and improved formulas for our Fabric Conditioner GreenSheets⢠and Dishwasher GreenTabsâ˘, shaped directly by you.
From my side, itâs been a busy one. Iâve been organising fresh stock deliveries, checking everything over, replying to your lovely messages, and packing orders as the improved formulas head out to their new homes. Seeing them ready and waiting on the shelves has been really exciting. Â
Thanks For Joining!Â
