A Conversation With Hampstead Tea
Can you share the story behind Hampstead Tea?
When Kiran discovered that most tea bags released microplastics and pesticide residues, she couldn’t stomach it, so she started Hampstead Tea. She imported the UK’s first plastic-free tea bag machine and helped certify the world’s first organic tea gardens. That was 1989. Today, Hampstead Tea still stands for integrity and trust - we’re rated the UK’s most ethical tea company by the Ethical Consumer.
Your teas are biodynamic and organic. Can you tell us what that means and why it matters to you?
Soil health and biodiversity are essential issues of our time. Tea is so widely consumed - imagine the difference it would make if we only drank tea organically and biodynamically farmed. Organic and regeneratively farmed tea means less chemicals in your body and in the earth and more wildlife and plants.
You’ve made great moves with your packaging. How does sustainability show up in the way you protect and present your teas?
Our tea bags have always been genuinely plastic free and we also have a large range of loose leaf tea. They’re made from unbleached paper stitched with organic cotton. As a brand, we’re constantly trying to raise awareness around the use of PLA plastic and misleading packaging claims in the tea industry. Plastic pollution is out of control, and we’re trying to do our bit by keeping microplastics out of your cuppa and out of the environment.
Can you tell us about your Subscribe & Save service, and the benefits?
Subscribing means that you save 10% on your tea delivery and ensure that you can get Hampstead Tea (as we’re not yet available in the big supermarket chains).It also helps us order just the right amount of tea from our gardens. As a small company, we work directly with our growers and don’t overstock like larger brands. That means less waste and fresher tea for you. By subscribing, you help us plan better and ensure your favourite blends are always in stock.
If someone is trying Hampstead Tea for the first time, what blends would you most recommend?
Our English Breakfast is one of our best sellers and one of the only black teas on the market that doesn’t contain microplastics. Customers love our green teas for actually tasting good. Peppermint & Spearmint is also a firm favourite. Unlike mass market tea, you won’t find ultra processed flavourings in any of our herbal blends.

I’ve had the fun (and very busy!) job of sorting, checking and organising all of our new products ahead of launch. One of my favourite parts of the role is seeing everything first-hand before we launch, testing it together as a team to make sure we’re bringing you the very best. The shelves have been stacked with colourful bottles and GreenTabs™, and it’s been so lovely to see them finally making their way to your homes. 😃
From carefully packing each parcel to replying to your kind messages and photos, launch week has definitely been one to remember. It’s so exciting to know you’re already enjoying our new products.
